LDN and candida yeast
Modified By Yvonne on 10/10/2008 7:50:39 AM)

I finally got what's probably the correct diagnosis for the itchy skin that's plagued me for the past 6 months: candida overgrowth, which can happen while on LDN. (and following taking an antibotoic, as happened in my case). The dx came from my alternative MD; I didn't realize candida could make one's skin itch, but this makes far more sense than to think I would develop an autoimmune problem like eczema (said the dermatologist) or worsened food allergies (said the GP) while on LDN.

I've stopped the LDN and will do thorough candida testing and treatment., The alt MD uses long-term diflucan, which makes me nervous as it has many potential side effects, so I may try some herbs first. (And I already tried a packaged candida cleanse plus digestive enzymes and probitoics, but that hasn't been enough to lick it).

The transition off LDN, from 3 mg every other morning, has gone fine. I haven't noticed any difference except that some of my under-eye swelling (TED) has returned and the eczema on my palms is threatening to flare. I look forward to getting back on LDN after dealing with the yeast.

Re: LDN and candida yeast

Yvonne,

I'm on the way out the door and will reply more thoughtfully when I return to all points, but I just wanted to say that I personally don't care for Diflucan. More later.

Re: LDN and candida yeast

It's true, candida (of the skin) could seem like eczema, especially since it can have scaling. It usually appears as reddish-purple itchy patches with some signs of bistering. Did you get a skin scrape? Personally, I would try a topical anti-fungal before trying an oral anti-fungal antibiotic like Diflucan. I tried Diflucan years ago for a fungal infection. Not only did it not clear it up, but I had some side effects as well. I think oral Diflucan (fluconazole) might be more useful for oral candida or thrush. I ended up using a topical which did the job and had no side effects. You might want to mention to the doctor that you'd like to try a good topical treatment first before an oral treatment.

As for TED cessation -- if this isn't proof that LDN works for TED, what is? Whatever all the other benefits, like increased energy or sense of wellness or even treating eczema, the fact that it treats TED so effectively is just nothing short of remarkable. I think an LDN and TED trial is called for! Anyway, I hope you can start taking LDN soon once you get the yeast condition under control.
